I went to go see the Transformers movie yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] triple_x. I will confess to a taste for movies that are aimed at kids, as well as movies with plenty of special effects. I have to say that, aside from the typical Hollywood silliness, I was not disappointed. Plenty of FX, and a slightly geeky kid helping to save the world. Even the love interest had some depth to her that made her bearable. I wouldn't even say there were plot holes you could drive Optimus Prime through (although maybe Bumblebee). It did not hurt having a media geek along to help keep me up on relevant Transformers trivia.

I took two kids and a 68-year old to see it. The humor worked. I particularly liked the boddy language of the boombox decepticon as it skulked around AirForce One. It seemed frantic and slaptstic, which I'd never seen done with CGI before.

I think what most people saw for the first time on the screen was CGI with a sense of momentum, and almost normal physics. Big robots didn't lightly touch down; they crunched things. They didn't stop on a dime; they went skidding and careening. They fell. Sure, there was no conservation of mass or volume when they transformed, but that was known going in.

I was suprised it had as much humor as it did.
