I took two kids and a 68-year old to see it. The humor worked. I particularly liked the boddy language of the boombox decepticon as it skulked around AirForce One. It seemed frantic and slaptstic, which I'd never seen done with CGI before.
I think what most people saw for the first time on the screen was CGI with a sense of momentum, and almost normal physics. Big robots didn't lightly touch down; they crunched things. They didn't stop on a dime; they went skidding and careening. They fell. Sure, there was no conservation of mass or volume when they transformed, but that was known going in.
