For those who asked (well, just [livejournal.com profile] noirem really) our plans are indeed to go to Dickens on Saturday the 4th. We are meeting my grandparents at 11 either at the front or at Fezziwigs if we miss each other at the entrance.

Anyone who plans to visit the fair on that day from the east bay wish to carpool into the city? The parking is $7 so it would be nice to save money, as well as the company. We will not have time in the morning to go far off our route but meeting either at our house by 9:30 or meeting somewhere along the route is an option.

Oh yeah, who all is working at Fezziwigs this year?

And for those doing DG windows that day, when can we expect to find you there?

Also, I was wondering if there is a pre-show. In the past there was a pre-show of Mr. Dickens going around and bringing to life the various characters from his books. It is just the kind of thing I think my grandparents would enjoy, so I wanted to know if I should tell them to arrive early for this or not. Any one who is working there know and if there is, when and where?

there is a "pre-show" if it is called that. i think they let customers into fezziwigs at 10:30... but someone from fezzies would know that better than i!

I'm not working but:

There is a pre-show, every day. Don't currently recall the time, but I would expect getting there about 15 minutes before opening would work. And you can see my hubbie with is One Line!

My hubbie is working. ;-)

Which novel is that from?

A Christmas Carol.

Dick Wilkins was the clerk underneath Scrooge when Scrooge was working for Mr. Fezziwig. The reference in the book was "Ah... poor Dick." Said by Ebeneezer on his return trip to teh past.

The way it is played is that Mr. Wilkins is an eager young man from lesser circumstances wanting to prove himself. Therefore, often when Scrooge gets his walking papers, Mr. Wilkins is promoted to Assisstant Clerk [Scrooge's current position]. Mr. Wilkins also tends to get in trouble as the Fezziwig daughters like him, but he doesn't want to chance losing his master's good graces, not that it always stops him.

also: an idea for your grandparents... high tea at the tea shoppe? it is at 4pm and you MUST make reservations in the morning. another option is just coming into the tea shoppe at anytime and ordering "afternoon tea" for the same price as high tea except that you get more choices.... i can tell you more if you wish....

Was thinking of doing just that. The high tea is a good idea, although I will have to ask if they want to wait that long. If they are up for staying that late I will lobby for it. Either way we will make a stop in the tea shoppe. See you there!

actually, unless you come back to the kitchen, you won't see me.. you will just eat my sandwiches!

the afternoon tea option might be better then... you get to chose your sandwich, type of tea and dessert and you still get to keep the tea pot. at the 4pm sitting, everyone gets PG Tips tea, trifle for dessert and a quarter of each type of sandwich.. no choices.

I prefer the Afternoon tea. Less crowded. More flexible timing.

Of course I plan to come back to say hi. I have before, remember? I know what it is like, I used to work in the tea shoppe kitchen.

Sounds like the regular afternoon tea is probably the better choice, as there are choices and timing is more flexible. We shall see. Thanks for the info.

Sam Weller (Pickwick Papers) here. The outside doors open sometime between 10:30 and 10:45 - earlier if the weather is poor - but people are only let into Fezziwigs. The "Tableau", which is the pre-show you remember, happens sometime around 11:00, sometimes a little earlier.
