Work is eating my life, so I have not had time to do much else these days. If I have forgotten anything important, let me know.

I think I will make time for a beer tonight, though. Dr. Weil seems to think it will help.

Jumper

I read Steven Gould's Jumper many years ago, and loved it. Later, the sequel, Reflex was just as good. A little while ago I noticed that there is yet another book in the series: Jumper: Griffin's Story. I decided to wait until it came out in paperback before reading it, so by the time the movie came out the other day, it was still a morsel waiting for me.

Now that I have seen the movie, I am not so sure I want to read the new book. The main thing that I disliked about the movie was how much they messed with the world from the first two books. It turns out that the timing of the latest book has a lot to do with the reworking that I saw in the movie. It turns out that Jumper: Griffin's Story reflects the movie more than it does the first two books. Concepts like "hunters" and even Griffin himself don't really fit with the way the first two books are written.

This reviewer captures much of how I feel about the difference between the two versions (especially regarding the first two books):

Who is with me?

Edited to fix link (so try it again).

I can't decide if I want to try making these cookies or if I should run away screaming (my arteries are voting for the later). Consider how much we like bacon in my house, it is a toss-up.

They remind me of the much touted Maple Bacon Bar at Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland.

I ended up staying a bit late at work, which has worked out nicely. We are all getting a lovely view of the lunar eclipse over the Bay Bridge, framed by high rises, from the office conference room. It sounds like it is actually too cloudy in the east bay for me to have seen it there anyway.

Your Score: Rabbit

You scored 18 Ego, 14 Anxiety, and 17 Agency!

IT was going to be one of Rabbit's busy days. As soon as he
woke up he felt important, as if everything depended upon him.
It was just the day for Organizing Something, or for Writing a
Notice Signed Rabbit, or for Seeing What Everybody Else Thought
About It. It was a perfect morning for hurrying round to Pooh,
and saying, "Very well, then, I'll tell Piglet," and then going
to Piglet, and saying, "Pooh thinks--but perhaps I'd better see
Owl first." It was a Captainish sort of day, when everybody
said, "Yes, Rabbit " and "No, Rabbit," and waited until he had
told them.

You scored as Rabbit!

ABOUT RABBIT: Rabbit is generally considered Clever by his many friends and relations. He is actually a much better reader and writer than Owl, but he doesn't consider it worth mentioning. Instead, Rabbit's real talent lies in Organizing Plans. He organizes rescue parties, makes schemes to reduce Tigger's bounciness, and goes on missions to find out what Christopher Robin does when he's not at the Hundred Acre Woods. Sometimes, however, his Plans do not always go as Planned.

WHAT THIS SAYS ABOUT YOU: You are smart, practical and you plan ahead. People sometimes think that you don't stress or worry, but this is not the case. You are the kind of person who worries in a practical way. You think a) What are my anxieties about and b)what can be done about them? No useless fretting for you. You don't see the point in sitting around and waiting for things to work out, when you could actually work them out today and save yourself a lot of time and worry. Your friends tend to rely on you, because they know that they can trust you help them work things out.

You sometimes tend to be impatient with people who are less practical in their ways. You don't have much patience for idiots who moan about things but never actually DO anything about them. You have high expectations of everyone, including yourself. When you don't succeed at something, or when something goes wrong despite your best efforts to prevent it, you can get quite hard on yourself. You need to cut yourself some slack and accept that everyone has their faults, even you, and THAT IS OKAY. Let yourself be faulty, every now and then, for the sake of your own sanity.

For the last few months [livejournal.com profile] chaosloom has been sleeping on an inflatable mattress, so we were delighted to find out he has access to a free futon and frame. The only problem is that it does not seem like it will fit in my station wagon. So, we need to find a vehicle that is big enough to fit a futon frame to drive his new bed from San Francisco (Sunset district) to Vallejo.

Anyone with a big enough vehicle available this weekend to help?

For those that are interested to hear how we managed to do this, I will give a brief listing of the various legs of the trip, from my perspective.

1: Walk to BART
2: BART to SFv ($3.30)
3: MUNI to CalTrains station (N Judah,$1.50)
4: MegaBus to Union station ($0.50 for all of us) which came in over an hour late because we had to take a different route because of the snow-in at the Grapevine
5: Flyway bus to LAX ($4)
6: Hertz shuttle to Herts rental area (free)
7: Compact rental car to Anaheim Hilton, with some confusion along the way because of road works along our route (~$105)
8: At 2 PM, arrive at hotel to find that: yes, we have a room, but we cannot use the water for the next 4 hours because they are working on the pipes (they gave us each a bottle of water to tide us over)

Oh, and we have to pay for the wifi.

BTW: Supper Shuttle from Union station would have been $78 a person which was why we did not do that in the end. It might have been cheaper from LAX, but at that point we knew the arrival time was up in the air and we had not idea when we would get there.

%$#@!

There are NO viable transportation options from Union Station in LA to Anaheim after 10 PM tonight.
I hate the idea of taking a cab, which will probably cost about $130.

Arrg!!!

Our original plan involved a friend picking us up, but she backed out after we had already booked the bus, and it was too late to change at that point.

Edit: We HAVE looked into:
- taking the train (10 minutes to catch a train is not enough, especially when you are not sure the bus will arrive on time)
- having a shuttle pick us up (cost $78 a person because it is not a standard route)
- taking the Metro (unless I am wrong, it stops running at 8 PM)
- renting a car (there are no rental places still open that late in that area)

Hey!

Perhaps what I should be asking is if any SoCal friend want to join us this weekend?
ragani: (Pen-Huh?)
If I get the Southern California discount tickets to Disneyland using a so-cal friend's info, will I have to prove my residency when we enter the park the first time with said tickets?

They look like the best price for what we want, but I worry that I will be asking for trouble since I have no way to prove my residency.

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] chaosloom!!!
ragani: (Pen-Hey!)
...blogging in the blogger lounge.

Because I can.
ragani: (Pen-Hey!)
Well, things are looking good for the Disneyland trip.

• Travel to Union Station in LA from SF and back: Check
• Inexpensive reservation at a hotel where we are happy to stay: Check (nice job, sweetie!)
• Tickets to the Happiest Place on Earth: Check
• Transportation from Union Station to Anaheim Hilton on Thursday evening: ...hmm... any suggestions?
• Meals: ongoing planning...
• Friends to enjoy the trip with: various...

We have some friends joining us, although I am bummed that [livejournal.com profile] mvwrose is probably not going to make it. At least it looks like [livejournal.com profile] gardengirl_34 will make it, and I think a few others.

Anyone else?
ragani: (Pen-Hey!)
We were actually wavering on if we would be able to afford the trip to Disneyland at the end of this month for [livejournal.com profile] chaosloom's birthday, but it is looking like we might make it work. The key now is finding the cheapest lodging option. I don't think I know enough people in the area to put us up (unless there is someone offering), so that leaves cheap hotels.

Priceline, here I come!
