simultaneously frustrated

Why does this bother me? Well, the last Matrix release fell a couple of days before my birthday. For months before there had been talk of seeing it in celebration of my birthday. Well, that week arrived, and most of my friends had all been invited to see it the day of, a day that I had to work (or could not make it anyway). Well, I thought, at least my boyfriend and I can go see it together.
Then I called him that day for an unrelated reason.
Me: "Hi honey. How come it is so noisy?"
Him: "Um.... I am in a movie theatre. My company took us all out to see the Matrix: Reloaded."
Me: "Oh.... I see."
Him: "I'll still see it with you on your birthday."
Me: "That's.... Well, it would be unfair to expect you not to go."
The only plans that were made for my birthday this year, and they were completely disregarded by those around me. What is the point of going to see a new movie with all your friends in celebration of one's own birthday if the birthday-girl is the only one who has not seen it? Somehow it misses the point.
I good friend pulled through for me and we went together that night, just us girls. As fun as it was, and as great that she made time that night to go with me, it was not the same as having my boyfriend next to me during the passionate scenes between Neo and Trinity.
Fast forward to today:
Me: "So... is work taking people to the movie tomorrow?"
Him: "hmm... yeah, in IMax"
Me: "Figures. You are going, of course"
Him: "I could stay... but I really think I should go.
I'd be willing to see it again together."
Me: "Not the same. Unless we go tonight to a midnight showing."
Him: "I'd be up for it."
After failing to find anyplace showing it before 6 AM is when we discovered the simultaneous world release.
Argh!
He just told his boss that he would not be joining the rest of work for the movie so he could see it with me first. I am not sure how I feel about this, but I guess I am thankful, and touched that he cares enough to see how important this is to me. I am not sure if he would have done that 6 months ago at the last release, but things are much better between us these days.
It is just a movie! Does it seem justified that it is making me so upset? If it were not for the strong negative association of how the last release ruined my birthday, it would feel way to petty for me to be so hurt that I do not get to see it first with my partner.
