I have been seriously thinking about what can be done to further my own ability to help create sustainable, eco-friendly living beyond just talk about it. One of the things I have considered has become even more appealing to me recently, when put in the perspective of how little work I have been getting: finding a work-study or work-trade situation where I can learn more about permaculture.

Seeing as I am not tied-down with a job, the most challenging part is being able to afford getting the training, and covering the cost of rent and bills at home while I am gone. Some of the seminars that are out there have worktrade options, although that only ever covers the cost of the room, board and training, if even that much, but not for the expenses at home, of course.

There are a few out there that interest me (some more than others).

Permaculture & The Arts Design Intensive at the Frogwood Retreat Center in Boonville, California. There is Worktrade available through the Wilder Institute.

The Farm has an Ecovillage Training Center that has several courses, as well as apprenticeships. The courses I am most interested in cover energy and resource conservation, social and community skills, and the economics of sustainability.

R.U.S.T. sounds interesting, although it is in Austin, Texas, and is only a weekend in March, 2006. The cost of flying out there would be the most prohibitive thing, as they do charge for the workshop on a sliding scale, but even that would be costly for just a one weekend course.

A local, weekend only option, that only has a limited work exchange option, is Alameda Point Collaborative' Urban Permaculture Design course that lasts 6 weekends. It is not really within my budget, although it means I can live at home and still work during the week if work is available.

So, my question to my readers is: If I sign-up for one of these courses, would you be willing to pitch-in to help me afford the cost? If enough of you pitch in $10 or $20 over PayPal, I could at least defray the cost overall.
