Hot sun, pointless knobs
Apr. 11th, 2005 04:51 pmDespite the healing benefits of sun, especially in regards to my sleep issues, I actually got too much sun yesterday. I spent most of the day outside in the front driveway painting the sewing desk my grandmother gave me (sans sewing machine - but it was built for one to flip down inside). I regret not putting on sun-block as my arms and legs, especially on my right side, are rather red and painful.
The desk looks good though. I used the same paint that my mom used to sponge paint my bedroom walls, but instead of a sponge technique, I used a layered, dry-brush effect. I then distressed it with some fine sandpaper so that the layers of paint colors (off white, light green and a somewhat darker green) show through at the edges.
The only thing I need to do now is figure out where to find nicer hardware. The handles are a tacky gold color that does not go well with the green, and the style is very dated, in a way that I don't feel matches the distressed paint treatment. There was also a false set of knobs on the front that implies a drawer that is actually not. I have no wish to have unnecessary metal knobs sticking out right where I sit (I plan to use this primarily as my vanity since I don't sew much these days). The drawer pulls for the actual drawers (there are two drawers, but one is double-tall and looks like two separate drawers so it appears that there are three) have an odd sized drawer pull, that includes screw-shafts that inset into the wood. I am not sure I will find suitable replacements that will fit the same holes, but I have looked at Restoration Hardware and there are a couple there that I like that would cover the holes. Now to decide which will work best with the desk.
Oh, and I slept better than I have for a Sunday night (Monday morning) in some while, so perhaps getting sun does help, as long as I don't over do it!
