The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I took this week off, since
abditus has it off and some of my east coast family is in town, so there is a chance we will hang out some of the time. This morning, we got up semi-late (for a work-day) and lounged around in our PJs all day. We spent the morning, and well into the early afternoon, snuggled on the couch while
abditus played WoW, both of us listened to a book on tape and enjoyed creamed tea. Creamed tea, for those who are not familiar with it, consists of a pot of tea (in this case black tea with cardamon pods added) and scones with devonshire (or clotted) cream and jam. We listed to the sound of the rain coming down all day, without ever having to venture out into the wet. The fire place works again, so we were rather cozy inside, so I am thankful to
archangelkhaos for going to pick-up the yummy Thai food we ordered from our favorite Thai restaurant.
When
archangelkhaos came over after a futile attempt at staving off the flood at work,
abditus suggested we break out the extra copies of World of Warcraft we ended-up with (long story!) and load both my desktop and his so that the three of us could all play together. Once it was working, I discovered how much fun it is to play as a team, and think I have found yet another entertaining habit, although this one shared with
abditus' current obsession.
The Bad
Typically, someone in my family gets sick during the holiday. Often that includes me, since I was prone to get sick whenever exposed to any opportunities to catch a cold or flu. In the past year and a half, I have managed not to get sick nearly as often as I used to, and am pleased to say that in that time, I have only been sick 3 times, and recovery was usually much faster than it used to be. I was not one of those showing signs of being sick during the family holiday gathering this year. However,
abditus was, as was my sister, and three cousins. Now, on my first day of a week of vacation, I started to feel like I had not missed the bullet after-all. By late afternoon, it was clear to me, that although it came on with different symptoms than it had for my dear abditus, I indeed was sick. I have been hitting it with everything I can think of (including this surprisingly tasty concoction my mom recommended of an orange, olive oil and fresh garlic, blended), but it does not seem to be abating.
The Ugly
The onset of the cold, and the increased discomfort coincided with the hassle that was installing WoW onto my computer. First, it failed at the start of disc 2 of 4, 15 minutes lost. So, I start again and am almost done with disc 4 when I get the same failure notice and the past 40 minutes of loading is lost. $#*^%@$@?! Not only am I increasingly uncomfortable due to illness, but the amount of time wasted on getting this game to work has reached the ridiculous, as is the way the instal app is handling the failures.
Finally I get the game running (good thing abditus and I both use Macs - his primary computer is a Mac laptop), and after some minor difficulties, set-up my account and log-in. Then the crashes start. I must have crashed over a dozed times during the 3-4 hours we played. I know that my desktop is under the speed requirements, but abditus did not think that was going to be too much of an issue. However, after the number of problems I was having he has changed his mind and suggested that perhaps I should spend the money that my grandparents gave us on upgrading my computer. It is not enough to buy a new computer outright (or at least one to meet my needs) but it is enough to take the sting out of it. Still, I would have to put a big chunk of it on credit either way. The other option is to just upgrade the processor, which seems like a patch which will probably not have as much of an impact in the long run.
All that black tea from earlier, mixed with being sick, and trying to sleep next to someone who is also sick lead to me finally conceded defeat, and just get-up. After a little-bit abditus soon followed, and we are both sitting here at almost 6 in the morning at our respective computers, drinking tea and coughing (and for well over an hour).
And the silver-lining...?
I will admit to being excited about getting a new computer. I was just starting to feel I really did need one, but since I am helping my mom to buy one of her own soon, and putting that on my credit card already, the idea of having two computers to pay-off was setting-off debt tolerance alarms all over. Having the money from my grandparents does make it less of a burden, and brings it much closer to tolerable debt ranges. Anyway, buying a computer is exactly the kind of thing they would want me to spend it on.
Seeing as I have already taken this week off from work, I don't have to worry about screwing-up any work projects by my absence, which is nice. Sure, it is a bummer for us to be sick on vacation, but at least neither of us had specific plans, and had hoped to have plenty of chillin'-at-home down-time together. I guess that down-time is being enforced after-all.
