Right bat station, wrong bat time

Ever gone to the wrong party?

This afternoon [livejournal.com profile] abditus and I made our way down to San Jose to a party we had been invited to some time ago. We were running late, but I decided not to stress about it. We had never been there, and in fact, had yet to meet the hostess (the party is for a mutual friend). Despite the low-res Yahoo! map, we managed to find it with minimal difficulty. The door is answered by one of the residents of the house, who, upon seeing us directed us to the back where the party is in progress.

So far so good.

Once in the kitchen we are greeted by a couple of the people at the party, including the lady who turns out to be the hostess. Names are exchanged, and after learning my name the hostess does a double take. This is where having a distinct name comes in handy... had it been a more common name, she probably would not have made the connection that quickly.

"Oh, you are here for the party that we are having next week!"

The word D'oh never felt more apt.

The thing is, I have now checked the invite and my calendar, and there is no reason I should have thought it was the 10th and not the 17th.

The hostess was not fussed at all about having us there, as it was a party, so we stayed for a while and hung out. And now we know how to get there for next week when the actual party we intended to attend is planned.

I thought 34 was a bit too young to go senile, but obviously not.

But... I thought the hostess was moving out this weekend? Or was it a different party... ?

It was a different party earlier in the day. See, we have met mertuil before, even been to her parties there, and the party last night was for her, not a mutual friend, like the one we tried to go to. The mutual friend was not even at the one we ended up at instead, and will tease me beyond acceptable limits about this I am sure (unless he has grown-up enough to decide to see what a compliment it was that I such an effort to get to his party and that teasing me about it would not be a good idea).

Yeah, we literally walked into a party in which we had never met a single person there before.

Heh. Actually, even at [profile] mertuil's party, I walked in myself only knowing her and you guys...

Hope that your friend appreciates your efforts. ;-)

Actually, dear, the concept of teasing you never even crossed my mind. Hope you had fun.

Well, it would not be the first time you had, but I am glad to hear you have no plans to. Yes, I did have fun, but missed you. Next week then.

Indeed. Looking forward to it.

Um, Kristin says you left sausage for next week...what sort, so I don't make something overly similar?

abditus says it is a spicy turkey sausage. I still want to try what you make, even if it is the same kind.

and welcome!

It was a pleasure meeting you when I didn't have to worry about making the party go smoothly!
Looking forward to seeing you next weekend!

Actually, I agree, it was nice to just hang out with you when you were not running the party. I know what that is like and have met many people at my own parties who I don't get to know because I am hostess. And since there was a party going on anyway, it was nice that we did not have to abort our plans entirely do to my scheduling mistake, and still got to have a good time.

See you next week!
