Friday night on the town
Friday turned out to be a much more social night than I would have guessed a few days before. Thanks to
terpsichoros' posting I learned that Tempest was playing a free outdoor concert in Alameda, and the timing was such that it was perfect pre-FNW entertainment. I had not made up my mind to go, but it sounded like it could be fun, so I kept it in the back of my mind.
Thursday rolls around, and I found myself online and logged into my IM client. Out of the blue I get a note from colbybigcheese, who I know is my friend Roderick. This is a friend from Innyard who is notorious for dropping off the face of the earth for a couple of year, then popping up again. Well, it appears it was time for him to resurface, and since I was in dire need of getting out of the house, I suggested we meet-up and hang out that afternoon. We joined the soon-to-be roommate, C at her place for dinner and reminiscing. She mentioned her plans to go with her friend J to Friday Night Waltz the next day, and asked if I might go with to keep her company since she did not expect to do much dancing with her knee injury. I suggested that if they would go with me to the Tempest concert first, I would consider the FNW afterwards. Roderick said he was game too, and so we all met at C's place Friday.
The concert was nice - full of families with kids who were running around between the blankets and lawn chairs. The music was too loud near the stage so the Plough group that was dancing there ended up relocating to the back near the end of the concert. Several of them were heading to FNW, so they added their votes and eventually I gave in and decided to go, even though I was already feeling the start of a cold take hold.
It has been a long time since I have attended a FNW. There were a handful of people there who I had not seen in a while, and/or who were surprised to see me there. The music was an interesting mix with pop, techno and the like mixed in, which I mostly enjoyed. I did not expect to dance nearly as much as I did, but I ended up being asked several times. One of the friends who was surprised to see me was
veryloki who dragged me out several times. He is such a high energy person, and his dance style reflects this. He tended to pick the fast waltzes and continually add in fancy moves. Fritz was also there and his style is similar; both of them had occasion to leave me dizzy. Overall a great workout!
